Reality of Placements in 23 IITs

For decades, leading companies have consistently turned to the 23 campuses of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to recruit top talent with competitive salaries. IITs have been a hub for attracting prestigious firms for campus placements. However, post-COVID, the hiring landscape has shifted dramatically. The growing demand for specialized skills, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence, coupled with an economic slowdown, has posed significant challenges for IIT graduates in securing jobs.

One of the major issues IITs are facing is the skills gap. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly dominant, many IIT graduates are not adequately equipped to meet the evolving demands of the industry. This widening gap between industry requirements and graduate skill sets has led to a noticeable decline in placements over the past few years. While the number of companies visiting IIT campuses for recruitment has increased, the number of job offers has not kept pace, pointing to a clear mismatch between demand and supply.

Placement data from recent years indicates that this downtrend began well before the pandemic. Between 2016 and 2019, nearly 32% of IIT graduates were unable to secure placements, highlighting a growing concern. Although the demand for engineers spiked temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, the overall trend remains worrisome.

Recent figures show that between 2016 and 2023, out of 87,197 students registered for placements across the eight most prominent IIT campuses, only 62,452 secured job offers, leaving 29% without placement. The situation is even more alarming in the newer IITs, where the placement rate has sharply declined. These include campuses in Palakkad, Bhilai, Ropar, Tirupati, Gandhinagar, Patna, Indore, Hyderabad, and Jodhpur.

The decreasing placement rate has raised concerns about the ability of IITs to prepare students for the rapidly changing job market. Many believe the current IIT infrastructure is not keeping pace with advancements in cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence. Additionally, the government’s failure to address this growing problem further exacerbates the situation, leaving many IIT graduates struggling to find suitable employment opportunities.

The placement situation is particularly troubling at IIT-Palakkad and IIT-Bhilai, where placement rates have dropped to nearly 50%. One major issue is the inability of students to effectively communicate and impress recruiters, leading to missed job opportunities during campus placements.

IITs are being urged to adapt to evolving industry needs, especially by introducing more courses focused on artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. The recruitment landscape has shifted significantly since the pandemic, with many companies now focusing on downsizing rather than hiring. This trend has been most pronounced in the IT sector, where hiring has slowed considerably.

To remain competitive, IITs must ensure their courses and training programs align with the demands of the modern job market.

IIT Delhi Grad’s $17K Job Offer Withdrawn

On December 9, 2023, Sameer Kumar (name changed), a BTech graduate in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi, was overjoyed after receiving a job offer with an annual package of $17K from a Singapore-based company. Unfortunately, within five months, his excitement turned to disappointment. In June, the company abruptly rescinded the offer, stating they were reducing the number of positions from six to just two. They advised him to reconnect with the institute’s placement team for further assistance.

IIT Guwahati Student’s Job Start Delayed to 2025

A similar situation occurred with another engineering student from IIT Guwahati, who prefers to remain anonymous. He had secured a pre-placement offer from the ad tech firm Media.net in December 2023. However, by June 2024, the company informed him that his joining date was being pushed to January 2025 due to “unforeseen circumstances” that required changes to their original plans. The company assured him they would monitor the situation and keep him updated, but the delay left the student’s future uncertain.

IIT-B 2024 Placements: Increased Packages but Fewer Jobs Secured

The 2024 placement season at IIT Bombay concluded with an average annual package of Rs 23.5 lakh, up from last year’s Rs 21.8 lakh—a 7.7% increase. However, fewer students secured jobs through the campus drive compared to the previous year. The lowest package offered during the placements dropped from Rs 6 lakh per annum to Rs 4 lakh this year, with ten students accepting offers in this range.

A total of 558 offers from 123 companies featured compensation packages exceeding Rs 20 lakh per annum, while 230 offers ranged between Rs 16.75 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. According to a report, the number of companies recruiting from IIT Bombay increased by 12% this year. Additionally, 78 international offers were accepted, alongside 22 offers with annual packages exceeding Rs 1 crore. However, international recruitment was lower due to the war in Ukraine and a subdued global economy. In total, 775 students secured positions in multinational companies in India, and 622 students accepted offers from Indian firms.

The second phase of placements saw a slow start but gained momentum after April, with around 300 job offers received during this phase. Overall, 75% of students were placed through the campus drive, while another 15% found jobs independently. Of the 543 companies that registered for placements, 388 participated, and 364 made offers.

India’s Job Market Decline

Approximately 38% of IIT students, around 8,000 across all 23 campuses, are still waiting for job offers. The number of unplaced students has surged by 2.3 times in just two years, rising from 3,400 in 2022 to 8,000 in 2024. In percentage terms, the unplaced student population has grown from 19% in 2022 to 38% in 2024.

India’s jobless growth has been a well-known issue for some time. Data from Naukri.com reveals a 17% decline in job opportunities, dropping from 2.03 million in 2022 to 1.68 million in 2023. Entry-level positions for freshers also saw a 13% reduction, falling from 300,000 to 261,000. The fact that this trend is now impacting students from top institutes highlights the broader consequences of the economic slowdown.

Its very true. I have completed my M.Tech from CSE at IIT Kharagpur. The placement situation is worst these days. They will offer you job in campus placement and after few days it will be revoked. Thereafter you have to search for off-campus job. Its becoming a trick and show off now
